What different types of compressors are there ?
There are 4 general types which are scroll, reciprocating, screw and centrifugal compressors. These come for a range of different refrigerant gases like Freon, Ammonia and CO2.
- Reciprocating compressor, or piston compressor uses pistons driven by a crankshaft to deliver gases at a high pressure. Easy to maintain and most often deployed in smaller to medium size refrigeration installations.
- Screw compressor, or rotary-screw compressor uses a rotary-type to displace the gas. The compressor has two screws inside that fit almost perfect. A male and female screw. Between the rotors hot discharge gas is created and expelled. Screw compressors are energy-efficient and most frequently used is medium to larger size installations where high cooling capacity is required.
- Scroll compressor, or spiral compressor uses two scrolls to pressurize the refrigerant gas. One scroll is fixed will the other scroll while the other orbits eccentrically without rotating. This compresses the refrigerant gas. The benefit of a scroll compressor is that it is compact, with the downside being that when there is a mechanical failure it is impossible to repair because it is hermetically closed.
- Centrifugal compressors, or dynamic compressors, by adding kinetic energy with the rotor/impeller to the gas stream and slowing them down abruptly, you build up pressure. This design results in the ability to displace large quantities of gas efficiently in a relatively small package.
